Best St Estèphe 2019 wines tasted en primeur

Cos d’Estournel Search all St Estèphe 2019 wine ratings Better balanced in my eyes than the 2018 vintage, as St Estèphe was a little atypical last year with lots of extremely concentrated high alcohol wines. There is less of an extreme feel in 2019, which might not suit everyone, but I found a ton of wines to love, and can thoroughly recommend it when looking for value. 10 Argentina Malbec wines to try

There’s a standard cliché of Argentinian Malbec. Great with steak, obviously. Plenty of black and red plum fruit, usually with a baked or syrupy edge. Alcohol starting at 14% and edging up further to 16%… ‘I’ve tasted 16.5% – you cannot finish the glass, let alone the bottle,’ notes Patricio Tapia, DWWA Chair for Argentina and author of the influential Desorchados guide to Argentinian, Chilean and Uruguayan wines. ‘Those wines were part of a commercial boom in Argentina,’ explains Tapia. But while Argentinian Malbec has effectively become a ‘brand’ in its own right, now a staple feature on wine lists

Romané Basset remembers his father Gérard

Romané and Gérard Basset at the World’s Best Sommelier competition in Chile, 2010 When the late Gérard Basset OBE MW MS was crowned World’s Best Sommelier in Santiago in 2010, on his sixth attempt, his son Romané and wife Nina were there to share in the celebration of an achievement that was the culmination of years of hard work and study. Romané, who was aged 11 at the time, remembers that his father was convinced he hadn’t made the final round, and when his number was called, there was a frantic search to find Gérard and get him back on

Best Sauternes & Barsac 2019 wines tasted en primeur

See all Sauternes and Barsac 2019 en primeur wines There are some great wines to choose from here and, as ever, some truly excellent dry whites. Winemakers had to wait for noble rot to set in, after beautiful summer conditions that lasted well until late September. The botrytis cinerea eventually developed in early October, on already concentrated grapes, resulting in luscious flavours.
